Burnout is something that all of us face in our everyday life. Especially when you are working for long hours on tight deadlines. If you are experiencing burnout while working on your project or solving coding questions, you are not alone. In this blog, we'll discuss some main causes of burnout and I'll also share some of the tips that I use to prevent it.
Introduction
Before jumping on to causes we need to understand what burnout is and why we face it. After all, we don't want it.🙅♂️
Burnout is a state of emotional, mental or physical exhaustion caused by stress. often happens because of a loss of motivation, a lack of interest in work, or a feeling of being drained. Burnout can also be caused by working too much and not spending enough time engaging in hobbies or spending time with family and friends. What's the point of being productive all day and working so hard if you are not enjoying your life?
Consequences of Burnout😵💫
Burnout can have serious consequences both for you and your team. For you, it could lead to decreased productivity, poor performance, and most importantly a high risk of developing mental illness which I don't think any of you want. Burnout can also lead to physical health problems like headaches, back pain, and fatigue.🥵
For your team, it could add a decline in overall productivity. It seems a serious issue, isn't it? Now let's have a look at some tips on how we can prevent it.
Preventing and managing burnouts
There are many tips you can use but here I'll be sharing a few things that helped me and I use them now and then.
Take time off⌛
Yes, you heard it right. Taking breaks is very important. These breaks help reduce stress and make us feel recharged and fresh. You could also turn off Email notifications they are very annoying and if one comes while your break it gives you a hell lot of stress. It's better to give your body some time. Go for a short walk, take a deep breath and then head back to your work. Even a 10-minute break will do the job.
Yes, don't forget to drink water after all it's water that extinguishes the fire and not drinking water while you BURN out sounds silly.💧
Cut back on coffee and alcohol🍵
Now, you'll kill me. What, cut back on coffee to reduce stress? Bruh, are you out of your mind? wait let me explain...🤚
Caffeine and alcohol can provide temporary relief from stress, but they have negative effects on the body that can increase stress and anxiety levels in long run. Both of these drinks interfere with sleep quality and the consumption of Caffeine also dehydrates the body. As mentioned above it's better to drink water to maintain optimal hydration levels.
Get away from your laptop as much as you can💻
We sit for long hours in front of screens working hard, doing this constantly can be mentally exhausting. Taking a break can help reduce screen time giving rest to our eyes and also our minds, allowing us to recharge and come back with renewed focus and creativity. Don't throw your laptop just get away from it.
When we step away from our laptops, we have an opportunity to engage in non-work related activities like spending time with friends or pursuing hobbies, or simply taking time to relax and unwind can help prevent burnout and promote overall well-being. 😉
Go for a run🏃
This is my favorite activity. We all know that running has many health benefits both physical and mental but I see running as something more. Running for 30 mins provides you time for reflection and introspection that clears your mind that will help you be more focused. Running provides an opportunity to set and achieve personal goals, which boosts self-esteem and confidence. You tell yourself that I am tired and I can't go further then you go further and think woah I did it🤩 this sense of accomplishment translates into other areas of life and helps prevent burnout.
I run alone but you can take your friends with you or join a local running club that will provide you an opportunity to connect with others and build a sense of community.
Many people prefer a workout or gym and those things also have their benefits but personally running helped a lot sooo...😅
Burnout is serious for you and the above methods don't work?😨
If this is your problem then it is important to seek support to prevent the situation from causing further harm to your mental health.
Communicate with your supervisor. They may be able to make adjustments to your work environment Or change your deadline.
Seeking professional help from a therapist or a counselor can help you. They can provide you with support and guidance. Never feel ashamed of seeking professional help when needed. You never knew when things can get serious.
Join support groups or online communities can be a helpful way to connect with others who may be experiencing similar challenges. These groups can provide a safe space to share experiences, offer support and exchange coping strategies.
A thing to remember
Don't take so much stress over anything. Always keep yourself a priority and take care of your health. Remember why you are doing a particular task and what's your intention. Are you enjoying what you're doing? or it's just the money? Love your work, not your workplace. And at last, all I want to say is to embrace the changes in your life. Good luck!!😄
Conclusion❤️
Burnout is a serious issue that can have negative consequences for both individuals and teams. It's important to take proactive steps to prevent and manage burnout, such as taking breaks, reducing caffeine and alcohol consumption, engaging in non-work related activities, and seeking professional help when needed.
